Nancy Meade, General Counsel for the Alaska Court System, will present a comprehensive summary of Senate Bill 91, which was signed into law by Governor Walker on July 11 (ch. 36, SLA 2016).
This bill is known as the Omnibus Crime Bill, and has been described as one of the most important criminal justice reforms ever in Alaska. Its 122 pages of statutory changes will impact criminal defendants, attorneys who deal with any aspect of criminal law, and the general public.
Among other things, the bill includes changes to the definitions of certain criminal offenses, the permissible and presumptive prison terms and probation periods for crimes, drivers' license reinstatements, probation incentives and sanctions, releases on parole, and pretrial release decisions (bail).
This two-hour, fast-paced presentation will be a nuts and bolts explanation of the provisions in the bill, presented from a neutral perspective. There will be time for questions and answers.
You will need to follow along with the new law. Print a copy at: http://www.legis.state.ak.us/PDF/29/Bills/SB0091Z.PDF.
