This CLE will cover the history and growth of Access to Justice programs in Alaska over the last few decades as there has been a substantial rise in self-representation. The discussion will include information about areas in which Alaska has led the way nationally, including the creation of the nation's first fully remote self-help center, development of plain language forms, support for lawyers unbundling services, and the creation of the Community Justice Worker program. The presentation will also share information about development of the self-help websites, language access work, ADR projects, simplification of procedures, user-centered design, the Justice for All project, ODR, online guided assistants, and chatbot development.

Faculty:

STACEY MARZ is the Administrative Director of the Alaska Court System Director where she is responsible for statewide court operations. Stacey's strong focus on managing through an access to justice lens comes from her past experience overseeing the court system's statewide remote facilitated self-help services and language access services. She has championed using technology to bridge the access to justice gap and to improve court efficiency. Stacey has worked on many access to justice initiatives, including triage, simplification projects, the delivery of remote services, and plain language forms and website content. Stacey has trained judicial officers and court staff statewide and presented nationally on various access to justice and technology approaches.
