In 1916, Alaskans voted 2-1 to prohibit liquor. Alaska's “Bone Dry” Law became effective on January 1, 1918 - two years before the national Prohibition era began. The presenters will explore the status of liquor in Alaska in the decades before the Bone Dry Law, the circumstances that led to public support for prohibition in Alaska, the challenges to enforcing the law (using the Second Judicial District based in Nome as a case study), and the factors that led to the law's ultimate demise. They will also address the interplay between Prohibition laws and the separate, long-standing laws to suppress liquor traffic among Alaska's Native people.
Beverly Beeton, Ph. D., lives in Seattle. She served as Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at 2 Universities of Alaska and regularly speaks on subjects related to her research on the social history of Alaska around World War One.
Barbara Hood, J.D., lives in Anchorage. She served as an attorney in the public sector for many years and was a long-time member of the Alaska Bar Historians Committee.
